Santa Fe and The Fat City Horns Back Up The Only Show In Vegas, About Vegas!

VEGAS! the Show is a unique addition to the entertainment scene of Vegas due to its classic rendition of the days that started Sin City, but to make it truly authentic you need to recreate the music of the times right? Anybody can go and hear a recording, while people may not admit it, when shows throw on the speakers playing those pre-recorded studio tracks the audience is taken a step away from the production rather than being drawn in. With VEGAS! the Show one of the most elite and versatile bands of the Southwest United States backs up the production with great success. Adding that old school element that takes people right back to the day, Santa Fe and the Fat City Horns are one of the most legendary musical groups on this side of the Colorado River!

The band is headed by none other than musical legend Jerry Lopez. Claiming the group is a dream team, playing for VEGAS! the Show is the bands 5th incarnation. But the band was started as a dream, more than just a jam group Jerry had plans that extended far beyond fame and fortune. Seeking to create a musical entity who’s sole purpose is to enlighten the ears was something Jerry intended from the get go, listen to it in his words..

“This band is the culmination of the dreams of all of the individual musicians in the band. We all dreamed about what the ‘ideal’ gig would be, and it went something like this: To play music that moved, challenged and inspired us without the usual external restrictions, influences, or boundaries that come with every other (paying) gig,… To make that music with people we love and respect both personally and musically and to be able to share it with others.-

-That is what Santa Fe & the Fat City Horns is about. The band is a throw-back to all the horn bands that influenced us all growing up, as well as a tribute to our musical heroes and friends mixed with our own music and arrangements. Old School and raw, but polished with pride and discipline. I wanted to have the enthusiasm and excitement I had when I was 17 years old!”

With the power of creativity on his side, Jerry has managed to make Santa Fe and The Fat City Horns one of the (if not most) talked about yet unsung bands in Vegas history. They don’t perform to vast sold out theaters and stadiums, gig after gig booked for eternity, no these guys do it a little different, and a little more traditional. They are consistently packing out the lounge at the Palms, but even with this success, Jerry and the rest of the band play simply to play. With no motives extending beyond what they can see in front of them, the band has reached near cult status as the continuation of old-school Vegas in the modern times.

Naturally David Saxe looked to the walking legend Jerry Lopez himself to set the atmosphere for his homage to old Las Vegas. In that respect Saxe couldn’t have made a better choice as Sante Fe and The Fat City Horns add just the right amount of class and atmosphere to give the audience the inspiration to see the show through a different set of eyes, the live ensemble serves to touch audiences on a personal level with their music and engage them deep into the show without even realizing it. This could never be accomplished with recorded tracks, as David puts, the band is the heart and soul of the production!

So look no further to find the ultimate old school Las Vegas experience, complete with an authentic and legendary big band led by none other than musical master Jerry Lopez, this is the only show that recreates the old days with all the emotions that came with them! Get your tickets to VEGAS! the Show today and check out Jerry Lopez and his band Santa Fe and The Fat City Horns!

Tom Jones Was An Invader, Crooner And All Around Superstar! Pt.1

Tom Jones

Jones and Lennon

Thomas John Woodward (Tom Jones) is a welsh singer who made it huge during the height of what is coined as “The British invasion”, during this time bands like Led Zeppelin and The Beatles were already hot to trot around America taking a classic American blues styling and adding an electric guitar flair resulting a slew of bands that helped to define the late 60’s hippy movement.

Tom Jones Was A Different Artists Back Then

Tom Jones was different though, born in Wales in 1940, Tom was a singer who while managing to stay true to his roots, led the world on a wild ride. Jones was a singer from the start, often singing in choir or for fun Tom was right from the beginning the artists he was destined to be. When he was only 12 Tom was diagnosed with Tuberculosis and during this time he claims it was his deep seated will to sing and draw that got him through those troubling times. After nearly two years of recovery Tom had emerged from his circumstances stronger than ever, having spent the whole time working on his songs and singing, Tom was well on the way to the fame he was destined for.

Tom Jones

Jones and Joplin

Tom Jones Could Be Found Alongside The Biggest names In Entertainment

Jones grew up idolizing the American soul singers of the 50’s like little Richard and Elvis Presley, important to note is that later in life Tom would become friends with every one of his idols. At the age of 16 Tom married and was about to have his first child, to support his young family Tom took a job at a local glove factory and later transitioned into construction work. After touring with a famous group from South Wales, Tom’s name became fairly famous in his homelands of South Wales. After meeting producer Joe Meek Tom would attempt to attract various labels to no avail. Until he met Decca producer Pete Sullivan, Tom would no more know the life of anonymity.

Tom Jones

While the partnership was short lived, Tom built a career from his string of performances in working men’s clubs until he eventually met producer Gordon Mills, who soon after their meeting moved him to London and renamed him “Tom Jones”. Eventually Mills would land Tom a recording contract and his first singles “Chills and Fever” and “It’s Not Unusual” would take their first shots at wowing audiences, and that they did. The song was huge with international audiences thanks to the assistance of the famous “Pirate Radio” who promoted the song vehemently overseas.

Pirate Radio Loved Tom Jones!

The next year proved to the biggest of Tom’s career, becoming the most beloved vocalist coming out of the British Invasion, Tom Jones enjoyed success with crowds many groups in the British Invasion just could not compete with. By 1966 Tom would take home the Grammy award for Best new Artist and soon after meet his long time idle Elvis Presley, Whom he said happened to be singing one of his songs as he walked toward him to introduce himself.

As Jones popularity began to waiver by the end of 1966, Tom’s manager had the idea to transition Jones into a crooner as popular as Sinatra himself, over the next 5 years Tom would land a string of hits on both sides of the Atlantic, sealing the deal as the biggest international crooner of all time!

To be continued..

In Las Vegas, Headliners Run The Show!

Las Vegas Headliners

Las Vegas, Nevada is a city unlike any other in the world, defined by the entertainment that made it great it is a place where much is given, and expected! When it comes to the all-stars of the Strip, Las Vegas headliners are the key players that drive local tourism for good or bad. If there were no stars, then what would be the Vegas draw? Gambling? That would be about the only thing besides the wonderful outdoor activities provided by the surrounding desert, but people aren’t coming to Vegas to go hiking!

Las Vegas Headliners

Las Vegas Headliners Came In All Shapes And Sizes

From the humble lounge showrooms all the way up to the massive casino venues, Las Vegas headliners range in fame from rising amateur magician all the way to multi-platinum recording artists! But it is without a doubt the major musicians and entertainers that make or break entire casinos. Don’t believe me? Well let’s dive into a little story about one of the most famous Las Vegas headliners to stroll Sin City.

Las Vegas Headliners

Elvis Presley is the obvious example here, but also for his accomplishments on the fiscal side of the entertainment industry he has earned the title of most profitable star in Vegas history! Yes when the Las Vegas hotel first opened it was called “The International”, and the hotel would be the spot in which Elvis solidified his greatest comeback. Playing for the opening night, The International Hotel would prove to be the most lucrative of all the venues Elvis performed. Playing more consecutive shows than any other Las Vegas headliner in history, Elvis earned millions on top of what he managed to rake in for the casino.

One of The Most Famous Las Vegas Headliners Was Elvis Presley

People came from all over the country to watch the King of Rock and Roll on his new breakout as it was this period where he would release some of his most successful singles and albums. Performing almost daily for years, Elvis had created the ultimate Vegas attraction that none could compete with.

“Why bother, The International Has Elvis!” became the most common rant of frustration among local businessmen and hotel owners. He single handedly dominated all of the competition with his name, reputation and consistency. Elvis had the will and desire to give every show 1,000% percent of his effort. Not worried about the inevitable burn-out, Elvis carried on doing what no man had ever done before. Subsequently, since Elvis was treading such new ground many didn’t realize how quick a flame like his could burn out. That’s exactly what happened in the end, of all Las Vegas headliners, Elvis was the one who dived into the industry without fear, completely dedicated to the point where his body couldn’t keep up with his spirit any longer.

Las vegas Headliners

When Elvis left the world he had accumulated more than most stars made in their entire careers, and that was just in Vegas. He single handedly sky-rocketed the International into national fame and quickly became the face of Las Vegas. But he isn’t the only to make contributions far beyond his time, another man who’s life was riddled with trouble and massive success, Michael Jackson.

Michael Jackson Was Also One Of The Greatest Las Vegas Headliners Ever To Walk The Earth

Las Vegas Headliners

Taking the cake as one of the world’s most prestigious artists, where Elvis is the king of rock and roll, Michael Jackson is the undisputed king of pop. Smashing records not only in America but across the world, Michael Jackson was a world level artist’s who loved his fans as much as they loved him. When it came to Las Vegas Michael Jackson was somewhat of a regular. As far as Las Vegas Headliners go he sits right alongside Elvis as one of the most successful artists to ever play in Vegas. Economically they both stand side by side in the Las Vegas hall of fame for their contributions to music and the entertainment industry as a whole.

Las Vegas headliners have played an essential role in the growth and evolution of what is billed as Vegas style entertainment. The modern resort-wonderland of today’s Strip would not be possible without the titans of the stage who crafted an oasis out of the desert using only the power of their voice!

Fremont’s East District Looks To Revitalize Downtown Las Vegas

Las Vegas

East Fremont Looks To Renew The Historical Downtown Las Vegas

The growth of downtown Las Vegas has been a long and painful one, but many Vegas residents are looking forward to the days when Downtown is once again one of the highlights of the city. While the Fremont Street was revitalized in the mid 90’s, looks like phase 2 is well under way as a brand new piece of the street is again brought to life!

Along this stretch of road there have been a few bars that have come up and made quite a stir on this little corner. The Griffin being one of the first to start luring the younger crowd downtown, soon a few other venues followed suit like the Beauty Bar and Vanguard, but more have recently emerged and the scene is looking pretty different when compared to ten years ago. When the Fremont Street was first revitalized, it was done mostly for the tourists. While this project did in fact do what it was meant to do, downtown still wasn’t necessarily a place locals went to have fun.

Downtown Las Vegas Has Improved Dramatically In The last Two Years

Not to mention throughout the 90’s there were a few stories coming out from downtown that would make anybody want to steer clear unless you were staying in a casino. Stories of muggings, murders and other news that gives you goose bumps were just the tip of the iceberg. Las Vegas had a blemish and it was working hard to clean it up. With the addition of more police officers and huge investments from some companies we would never expect, the Las Vegas downtown area is now turning into a place many locals go to hang out on a weekly basis. In fact many bars are only filled with locals as tourists wouldn’t even know where to look to find some of these places.

It was companies like Zappos and Siegel Suites that are pushing hard to reinvigorate downtown, starting with the small details first. Downtown was facing a plague of old motels, run down apartments and mismanaged condo communities that were beginning to seriously dampen the atmosphere downtown. A few Vegas natives had an idea though, to turn the town around starting in one of its worst areas. Siegel Suites since 2011 has engaged in a campaign of bartering with owners of these run-down properties trying to grab a deal to potentially renovate the local community.

Companies And Investors Have Taken It Upon Themselves To Reinvent Downtown Las Vegas

Zappos has made an even larger contribution if you want to compare, with the addition of tens of thousands of dollars invested into a local beautification project, Zappos is looking to renovate the places that define the history of Las Vegas. After purchasing a number of highway stretches in the Vegas valley, Zappos successfully purchased the old City Hall of Las Vegas. In a huge effort the company has spent millions renovating and prepping their new downtown Headquarters which has yet to open as of May 2013. But when the headquarters is ready to go, Zappos ceo’s are confident their investments will begin to be noticed by the community. Cleaning up roads, adding decorative implements and helping the local government prioritize investments are just a few of the contributions the company have made toward a better downtown Las Vegas.

But if you are looking to experience the history of Vegas live on stage, then we have just the show for you! Just How Did Las Vegas Go From Natural Oasis To Entertainment Capital Of The World?

Vegas

The Birth of Vegas And The Meadows!

Las Vegas was first discovered by a caravan of Spanish traders looking to find a route through the Mojave Desert to Los Angeles. The Vegas valley was founded as the best place to resupply before the final stretch into California, something that would define the valley for the next 200 years. Naming it Las Vegas because of the natural springs that were bubbling up across the valley, all of these oasis made “The Meadows” the most unique place in the entire Mojave Desert. Until John C. Fremont traveled to Vegas in 1944, the valley was officially at the time a part of Mexico. Under assignment from the U.S. government, Fremont was tasked with leading a small expeditionary force of engineers and scouts to establish a fort in the valley due to the possibility of a war with Mexico. Once the group arrived they erected the fort at the well known Las Vegas Springs and when the war with Mexico finally came to a head, Las Vegas had already been claimed as part of the United States.

While the military fort that Fremont and his men used would stand for a number of years, there wouldn’t be a more permanent presence in the valley until 1855 when a group of Mormon missionaries came from Utah and established a new fort at the Las Vegas springs. Using flood irrigation to water their crops, the fort managed to survive until the end of the summer of 1857, when tensions within the group and the extreme heat of the valley finally broke the missionaries. After they abandoned the Springs Fort, the Mormons had returned to Utah, leaving the fort available for anyone who wished to use it. While the area would remained largely unoccupied, a handful of mountain men, hunters and travelers would utilize the two forts in the Springs, leaving little besides a temporary waypoint for passing travelers to resupply.

As Vegas Was Slowly Evolving

By 1865, a treaty had been established with the local Paiutes, and in return for supplies they would relocate away from the springs and the areas around the forts. Octavius Gass would end up taking one of the old forts and establishing the first ranch in the valley, “Los Vegas Rancho.” Here Octavius made wine and provided the key stop for the Mormon trail through the valley. By 1872 Gass expanded his ranch to nearly twice the size and used his position as a local Legislator to have his ranch rezoned for Nevada instead of Arizona, but less than ten years later due to financial miscalculations, Gass would give up the ranch to Archibald Stewart. Archibald would own the ranch up until his death and in the early 1900’s the ranch would be acquired by the San Pedro, Los Angeles and Salt Rake Railroad, adding more jobs and more reason for others to make The Meadows a permanent place to call home.

As more Mormons migrated to the area, Agriculture would end up being the number one industry building up Las Vegas for the next 20 years. While in 1910 Nevada was hit with a strict and thorough gambling prohibition, it wouldn’t be until the 1930’s that Nevada would see the need to revitalize its soon to be titanic entertainment industry. That would be when the building of the historic Hoover Dam was commissioned, and in 1931 Las Vegas would see its local population swell from around 5,000 citizens up to around 25,000 within a matter of months! While most were unemployed males looking for a job opportunity, many families followed the men to the desert with a promise of a better life. While many business owners and crime financiers would jump on the new market by creating a series of casino and showgirl theaters meant to entertain the rougher crowds, soon the Government decided it would be better for its workers to not to be under the influence of alcohol, so the decision to build Boulder City as an official labor town under federal supervision was made.

From Workers Paradise To Modern Vegas!

It was this rush of migratory workers that helped spur the first business owners like Thomas Hull to open the very first resort on the Strip, “The El Rancho!” While the resort was more famous for its buffet than anything else, the well had been tapped and since the days of the El Rancho Las Vegas has become the entertainment capital of the world and one of the number 1 tourist destinations in the entire world!

Dean Martin’s Early Career and How He Came to The Pack!

Las Vegas is home to some of the most exciting entertainment in the country; no other place in America rivals the rich history and variety of thrills located within the limits of Sin City. But just as much as people love to come and lose themselves in this modern adult wonderland, they owe the good time to a few key players in the entertainment industry who helped immortalize the city.  From singers, producers, club-owners and showgirls, talented people from all walks of life helped to establish Las Vegas as the party capital of America.

While you could make a list all day long of those who contributed to the city we have today, we are going to feature one of the men who helped bring a little humility and even a little love to an industry known for being morally cut-throat! That man’s name was Dean Martin, and to this day his songs are still on the radio like his heart had never missed a beat. With so much adoration and an entire generation of fans who worshiped the wide eyed crooner, it’s no wonder Dean Martin became the first triple threat in modern entertainment by becoming a hit on television, radio and even major motion pictures.

Dean martin, VEGAS! the ShowDean’s movie career was first centered on comedy, and that was all because of the man who helped Dean rise to fame and sat right alongside him enjoying the ride the entire time, Jerry Lewis! It was said the duo first began when they landed a gig together in Atlantic City, now it’s said they got this job due to Jerry and Dean’s expansive amateur careers: Dean had played a number of local dive bars and small clubs in Chicago due to his mafia connections, and Jerry was a comedian following suite except he happened to be in New York instead of Chicago. One day they both would catch each other performing on the same night at a popular club in New York City, and from there it was history as the two immediately began talking about putting on a show featuring the both of them. It was only a matter of time until somebody noticed what these two had, so they were given a shot at a small casino showroom in Atlantic City.

Signed to perform every night, the two put together a routine they were sure was going to be a hit. Their very first performance they were nearly booed off the stage and the producer told them if they did not come up with another act by the end of the night they were fired and done in the world of Showbiz! In one of those historic moments of things just “working out,” the two would together make a vow outside behind the casino to “Go for Broke!” They did just that, improvising a routine they had no forethought about. Dean simply started singing on stage while Jerry pretended to be a clumsy bus boy running around the showroom. The show ended with Dean pelting Jerry with dinner rolls whilst chasing him out of the showroom.

Dean Martin, VEGAS! the ShowThe audience couldn’t get enough, and it was said no showroom had heard so much laughter until the fateful night those two “went for broke!” After that Dean and Jerry would manage to get signed into a contract doing two movies together while being in charge of all their touring. The movies didn’t pay too much yet, but their tours are where the two raked in their millions and became national sensations. In 1956 the two went their own separate ways after Dean told Jerry “All you are to me is a money sign!”

Soon after, Dean would start his solo film career, landing a role in a more dramatic and much less profitable war film; Dean wanted to finally have a role where he was taken seriously as an actor. Also in the movie was none other than Marlon Brando, and Dean couldn’t pass up a chance to learn from one of the biggest up and coming actors of his time. So he begged and pleaded and eventually Miramax would replace one of the lead actors with Dean, having an idea that he could potentially earn them millions of dollars through his combination of movies, music and tours.  At that moment Dean Martin began his prolific solo career and the rest is quite literally history! Dean went on to create the wildly successful TV Show, “Dean Martin’s Variety Hour” on top of his membership in the most exclusive club in America, “The Chairmen of The Broads!”

So now that you are familiar with the early career of one of Vegas’ biggest stars, don’t miss out on your chance to see Dean Martin portrayed in the only show in Vegas about Vegas! So pick up your tickets to VEGAS! the Show today and experience a little bit of history for yourself!

More recently Lou has found himself starring alongside some of the best performers on the Strip in the award winning production, VEGAS! The Show. The show tells the story of what Vegas was and where it is going. Showing the evolution of a city that truly defined what it was to be the best in the business. Lou has lent his talents to make the show one of the top performances in Vegas.

Be sure to come check out Lou and the rest of the cast in VEGAS! The Show!
